The Mary-Jo Nadeau Scholarship

Thanks to a generous donation from a friend and colleague of Dr Mary-Jo Nadeau (1965-2021), Fobzu has established a scholarship in her memory.

The scholarship supports a female refugee student in financial need studying at a Palestinian university, reflecting Mary-Jo’s long-term dedication to supporting Palestine’s future generation.

Mary-Jo Nadeau, who died on 9th January 2021, was a sociologist and prominent social justice campaigner in Canada. She received her PhD from York University and taught at universities in Ontario, with her final position at the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.

Mary-Jo earned the affection and respect of many for her years of anti-racist campaigning and solidarity work. Friends and colleagues valued her spirit of optimism, warmth and modest attitude. As a founding member of Faculty for Palestine, a network of academics in Canada dedicated to campaigning for the rights of Palestinians, she was a leading member of the Canadian movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS), and an active organiser within the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

Mary-Jo Nadeau

Mary-Jo Nadeau was an inspirational activist-scholar and trade unionist who worked tirelessly for the rights of Palestinians, workers, and a wide array of social justice causes. Her contributions to the movements in Canada and internationally have left a profound mark on so many people. As a founding member of Faculty for Palestine, MJ was at the forefront of struggles around the right to education and academic freedom. Her warmth and support of younger activists was renowned, and this scholarship in her honour is a testament to her remarkable legacy in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
