“Palestinian students need support because we are under occupation and face many difficulties. This scholarship means so much to me because it means I don’t have to struggle to pay tuition fees.”
Wejdan, Fobzu-UNRWA Scholar, Birzeit University
Palestinian students and lecturers returning to university this Autumn do so at one of the gravest periods for the Palestinian people since the Nakba of 1948. Today Palestinians are confronting a political and economic assault by Israel and the US impacting every level of Palestinian society.
The tightening siege on the Palestinian people
At the same time as the colonisation and control of Palestine accelerates, and the US seeks to impose a settlement that forfeits basic Palestinian rights, Palestinians are experiencing the devastating economic and social impact of economic strangulation. Israel has withheld millions of dollars of Palestinian tax revenue while the US has suspended funding to the Palestinians and UNRWA, the UN body that supports over 5 million Palestinian refugees.
Breaking the international isolation of Palestinian universities
The tightening siege on the Palestinian people is being felt on campuses where vital support to students is being cut and Israel is forcing international academics teaching in the West Bank to leave the country, undermining Palestinian higher education and further isolating it internationally.
Stand with Palestinian students and academics. Donate today.
We work with UNRWA to provide scholarships to Palestinian students in financial need and our academic projects like the Fobzu Writing Residency for Palestinian Scholars help break the international isolation increasingly experienced by Palestinian academics. This is more important than ever before.
Please give generously to our appeal so that we can continue the urgent work to break down the barriers to Palestinian education. When donating, if you are a UK taxpayer don’t forget to Gift Aid it and boost your donation by 25%.
